The Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine has received a Health Canada approval for distribution across Canada. While this is certainly positive news, the distribution process is a lengthy one, that will continue throughout 2021. Each province has different challenge in regards to transporting and administering the vaccine.
There are numerous questions of note:
CBC recently released provincial/territorial details that answer some of the questions above. It clearly shows that each location has different methods and targets regarding vaccine distribution.
We must all have realistic expectations regarding the Canadian vaccine rollout. It is not expected that all Canadians will be vaccinated until the end of 2021. Beyond that, certain individuals will be unable to be vaccinated due to allergies or other medical conditions. In addition, there is a portion of the population that will refuse to be vaccinated (as the vaccine is not mandatory). We must also remember that children under 16 are unable to be vaccinated.
A vaccine is fantastic as it limits the risks associated with COVID-19. It is not a silver bullet though. We all must continue to practice all necessary safeguards when in any public setting. This needs to continue until 2022. It's only then that hopefully the COVID-19 pandemic will be over.
